If you tied the knot in the past four years, you could be about to get a very nasty anniversary surprise — a tax bill.
The taxman has been firing off demands to wedding venues that hired out their halls and function rooms for ceremonies because they did not charge the bride and groom VAT as they should have done.
Local councils, which hire out town halls and council venues for weddings, have been the hardest hit, with one London council saying it has been sent a “large six figure” bill.
Town halls are challenging the bills but, if they are unsuccessful, accountants say they will have little choice but to pass them on to couples.
